The Carl Martin Parametric Preamp is a very robust 3-band semiparametric equalizer. I have tried it for bass use and can compare it with the Empress ParaEQ.

First, the Carl Martin does what he is supposed to do. It offers three tapes that are also chosen for the bass. The controls are comfortable to operate and do not look as if they were easily adjusted by themselves. Overall, the operation of the Carl Martin feels for me in every respect very "logarithmic" - in particular the level controls reach around the middle position felt less clearly than to the extremes. The controls do not have a mid-range (zero), but the EQ is neutral in neutral. I could not hear a noise on the amp or on the headphone.

In the case of parametric EQs, the sound is fundamentally different from the graphic one, where the eye is also active. You have to work a lot more after hearing (which is actually good), but the Carl Martin does not make it easy for you. The fact that the quality (Q) of the band filters can not regulate is a pity and makes targeted interventions in the sound more difficult. But the Carl Martin wants to influence the overall sound rather than only individual interference frequencies filter away - as a notch filter it is not thought. He encourages to filter by hearing and not by regulation. Compared to the Empress ParaEQ I find it however less grippy and somewhat "opaque" in the sound influence. The Empress is more subtle.

From the form factor, the Carl Martin is a bit clumsy - it occupies as much space as a VT Bass DI or comparable devices, but is twice as high. This is probably due to the additional DI output, which is why the device called "Preamp". But it has neither pad nor a ground lift switch and therefore replaces a proper DI box only moderately.

All in all, the Carl Martin Parametric Preamp is not a bad device, on the contrary. But there is (better for more money) better.
