Boss ME-50B

Multi-effects pedal for bass with easy operation

Easy to set up = simply brilliant! The worldwide phenomenal success of the ME-50 guitar multi-effects processor has proved that the new concept from BOSS really works: multi-effects devices with a rotary control for every setting - no menus, no programming, only sound and fun!

The ME-50B has been constructed in much the same way: As with a chain of individual effects units everything is easily adjusted by hand, but the device is more compact, versatile and cheaper than a suitcase full of individual pedals - ideal for bassists! Brand new features are the "Octave Up" effect (adds a note one octave above the original with adjustable drive), "Hi Band driver" (distortion only in the treble, bass remains clean), and the "Sound Hold" effect (lets you endlessly sustain a low note while playing over it).

  • The simplest operation set-up of all time - Rotary knobs for all settings!
  • 23 Different effects in the best BOSS quality with new effects "Octave up", "Hi Band driver" and "Sound Hold"
  • Built as an effect chain ( manual mode) with three on/off switches; can be switched to memory mode (with 24 memory locations)
  • Compressor/Limiter section with the modelling of previous legendary compressor pedal models, as well as EQ with a sweepable mid
  • FOOT SWITCH 1: Filter/Tone effects with the new Octave Up, Octave, T-Wah, Defretter (fretless playing with a fretted bass!), Fade In effect, Enhancer, EQ presets (Bottom Boost, etc.), as well as Hollow (converts the sound into that of a semi-acoustic bass!)
  • FOOT SWITCH 2: Drive/Synth with bass-typical distortion modelling, the new Hi Band driver, and four different synth sounds with fantastic tracking
  • FOOT SWITCH 3: Delay/Modulation with Sound on Sound (audio loop) with adjustable kick drum, the new Sound Hold effect, Tap Tempo Delay, Analog Delay, Chorus, Phaser, Flanger and Reverb
  • Expression pedal with Bass Wah and 5 additional functions, as well as a built-in tuner
  • 24-Bit A/D and D/A conversion with 44.1 KHz sampling frequency
  • Battery operation (6x AA), or optional 9V power supply (BOSS PSA-230)
  • Dimensions: 384 x 225 x 78 mm
  • Weight: 3.2 kg

As multi effects pedals go, the ME-50B is pretty hard to beat. Solid construction with an expression pedal (which can be used for volume, wah, octave up/down etc.), 3 stomp boxes (for distortion, synth and delay type sounds), on board eq, on board compression and a volume pedal. It gives plenty of bang for your buck.

The stomp boxes can be used individually or can be combined to make custom effects which can be then stored in the memory bank. Each bank can have 3 sounds per each stomp box so the first bank for me was a clean sound, a distortion sound and then a delay sound as this was what i used most. I was then able to create custom banks for certain sounds where I wanted 2 different volume levels of the same distortion sound.

Each stomp box has a number of different settings under each type so there is plenty of scope to mix and match to emulate the sound you want.

For a serious player the sounds may be too generic or rigid and you may struggle to make a legitimately 'unique' sound you can call your own. However I found this invaluable for the covers band I was in as you will be required to emulate a large number of sounds and its cheaper to have a pedal board than have multiple pedals.

It is a durable piece of kit and after many years it really only had some minor scratches to the paint work. It has been put through its paces and received numerous bangs over the years so definitely stands the test of gigging.

A great experimenting tool
Patrick M, 24.02.2015
I purchased this with the intent of experimenting a little with my bass. I've been pretty 'straight up' until now, and asides from the occasional boosting to amp my slap sound up I've never ventured far into effects. This pedal is fairly good for that purpose; there's a reasonable variety of effects that sound equally reasonable. As it turns out, I don't like many effects on my bass playing after all, but you may well help find your own sound with this (honestly, who has the money to buy all the proper pedals to discover their sound?).

Unfortunately testing is probably as far as this could go for me. It's fairly easy to navigate, but one of the functions involves quickly pressing the pedal forward, which is sloppy over a dedicated button. Miss that on stage or don't press it fast enough and you'll be red in the face. Also...no power supply? No case? What's up with that, Boss? The sound effects, while pretty good, are also probably not up there for a professional band.

So if you want to find your sound, perhaps invest in this, find what you like and go buy the real thing. It's a shame though that you can't buy multi effects pedals for bass that are on par with some of those for guitar.
