I've hit here and bought two of my own. I use it on solo shows with vocals and acoustic guitars and with my trio (guitar, bass, sax). I especially like the back-friendly transport and the good sound distribution in twisted rooms.

For Solomusiker enough 1 box, further musicians should have a box as far as possible, so that they themselves good hear. The sound on the stage is good, but the maximum volume is limited by the small bass speakers. If it is a lot of bass, the boxes should stand in a corner.

As a stereo system, the speakers sound pretty hi-fi. Therefore, they serve me at home as stereo speakers for my 65 inch UHD TV, which works great and almost sounds like a surround sound system. It's just beautiful ...

To the technique: The rods have only 6 small speakers (about 2 inches) in the upper part, which are offset to each other and radiate in 6 different directions. You can insert the speaker modules in three positions: at the bottom, at the height of the seat or at the top. There is no extra tweeter. In the uppermost position, the loudspeakers are pitched while standing, while the bass module is on the ground. This results in a homogeneous sound only at a certain distance.

In the bass module is a driver with about 8 inches, which provides for proper wumms, but not exactly the trouser legs flutter. It is enough for a cajon or percussive guitar. The built-in digital amplifier needs less than 200 watts, so you can run it via an inverter if necessary also by battery.

The mixer is minimalistic: there are only two separately controllable channels: microphone (with sound control) and line (without sound control, switchable on guitar). Switching to guitar does not effect boosting, only a bass reduction and presence boost.

The sound is surprisingly wide-band and wide-framed and the maximum volume is quite practical. Compared to my two AER Compact 60, which I was used to, the sound is much more natural and open and I can turn up louder before it whistles. However, some guitarists will miss the more centery sound characteristics of the AER boxes when it comes to their ability to assert themselves against other instruments.

A few criticisms, however, are already on the Bose L1 Compact:

1. The small speakers sound a bit hard and cold compared to a vocal box with horn tweeter. This is strange, however, when working as a music system is not.

2. Unfortunately, the subwoofer can not be controlled separately and is too loud when it is on the ground in a corner. When you stand with the acoustic guitar right next to it, it tends to wummern. From far away it is then ok. Some guitars will go wild with this system if you do not close the sound hole.

3. One misses very much a sound control for the line and guitar input. Unbelievable, that Bose has saved, where a DSP is already in it anyway ...

4. The microphone input sounds quite neat, but is only optimized for dynamic microphones and has no phantom power. It sounds much better if I connect the microphone to my small Mackie mixer 402-VLZ3 and feed into the Bose box by line input. That is, the Bose preamp is not the best.

4. The overall process is ok, but the pedestals stand only a few millimeters from the ground, so the column wobbles on uneven ground. Also, the plug-in bars tend to rattle at certain frequencies (eg, empty G-string of the guitar). I liked the bag for the poles.

Overall, I am satisfied despite these deficiencies, although I find the system for the bids somewhat expensive.

Recommendation: In order to enhance the possibilities, you can use a small mixing console with effects. I have eg an Allen & Heath ZED 10FX and control the boxes over the line input in stereo.

I use 2 Bose L1 Compact for mobile use on smaller events up to 100 people for DJ sound reinforcement. The transport and construction is a real joy; No heavy parts drag and build quickly. The sound is very appealing and space-filling. Impressed also by the bass - there comes out more than thought. Since the sound is well distributed, you do not have to turn up fully, which many guests gratefully take note of. If two systems are used, care must be taken that the parts are not too close together, which is due to the enormous beam angle. If you are mainly interested in partymusics and do not want to carry such heavy parts, you should definitely test this compact design.
