Dragonfly heaven

Avison_UK, 30.09.2014
I think it's fair to say I should get out more and not get excited about the sound quality of a microphone, but the Blue Dragonfly is a bit special. Unusually I use a 'studio' mike like this in live settings, not in every setting but in ones with good acoustics, just to get a great primary signal, and it works for me. What's particularly special about the Dragonfly is that the frequency response is very level (and therefore workable), but also that its design (pretty much like a dynamic mike in appearance and mounting) really suits a live setup.

This is used by me live in an acoustic solo (+1 occasionally) setup, usually for voice. But I've seen Dragonflies used for instruments, like saxophone, and the effect is amazing. The Dragonfly seems to cope very well with 'loud' sources, but I find it is very good with the male voice (fairly powerful). The trick is to not spoil everything with bad mixers and PA, but that's another story.

Good: great performance with strong sources, attractive mounting arrangement compared to many 'studio' quality mikes.

Bad: only really the cost (fabulous value, but still pricey). If your other equipment (pre-amp, mixer, PA) is rubbish then this is a waste of your money.

Verdict: combined with other quality equipment, this is a superb live setting microphone, that evolved for the studio (where it's brilliant), but brings joy to a sound engineer's heart in a live setting.

The slightly different microphone

Dirk269, 03.03.2012
Processing:
On the outside, the microphone already makes a lot of. It looks very good and is high quality processed. The joint of the capsule makes a solid impression and is somewhat difficult, as it is held in position by the Shockmount rubbers (there moves nix). The positioning is by the rotating capsule really very simple and precise.

Sound:
The Dragonfly definitely has no linear frequency response. There is a strong boost in the low and high frequencies. The raw sound has not hewn me now from the stool, but what you can rausholen from the micro is wow! I had to screw the bass back a bit, but then I had a beautiful airy sound. Grade in the high frequencies can trump the Dragonfly. I know in the 500-1000 euro segment no microphone which can keep up. However, I really had to fight with the basses.

In practice, it has proved to be generally successful. Acoustic guitars and percussions are very clearly reproduced and get the typical Dragonfly character.

In vocal recordings, I have a divided opinion:
For quiet, sensitive singers, I can recommend the microphone absolutely. It gives the voice a very beautiful character which I would call airy and voluminous. The manufacturer recommends a close discussion of a few centimeters, which gives the shot a certain presence.
However, the microphone does not fit any voice! It has a very special character. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. The Dragonfly can work wonders when it fits.
