Sampling of samples was NEVER so easy. :)

Steffen Hoesel, 19.12.2013
To start with, I was looking for something with the Octatrack, which I can easily and quickly expand its tracks in order to fire all my drumsounds directly and not to have to resampeln :)

The MPX does exactly that. Simply brilliant! MIDI channel set to 10 and the Luzy :-) Now you have exactly 8 pads - effectively 8 tracks - which one triggers via the Sequencer and can fire its drumsounds directly, without "even" a single Audiotrack of the OT "abuse" to have to. I really liked that! You can also pitch the individual samples and can even ne nen reverb put on it - fine thing for such a small box. Here is the first time a DICKES praise to Akai for it. Wonderful!!

Now for the reason why I give him with the features and also in the sum still only 3 stars: Since I wanted to use the part for firing drumsounds, for the rudimentary adjustment of the drums to the track is of course an influence on the decay of the sample required. This parameter is incomprehensibly complete! Why Akai? Why? :( Without decay control, you have to rely on perfectly prepared samples, which of course makes sure that the spontaneity is flushed. Especially since the box can not be easily re-equipped: you have to insert the card into a card reader and record it - because of the USB on the device itself does not go, and to all the excess is also a further disadvantage: the sample loading times are abnormally high, so quickly prepare a drumset becomes a regular patience, because the preview of the samples so incredible Takes a lot of time.

My conclusion: Although the firing of the samples is super simple and the idea really good ... but the implementation failed on 2 things: Decay control of the sample is missing and the sample loading times are abnormally high. Thus, the spontaneity is undone again and you can not use it at the end. Pity Akai ... really a pity. For the price the box would have been perfect without the mentioned drawbacks. Unfortunately, it comes only half-finished - and the price is no longer justified again.

Cost-effective solution with some fall knits

Wolfgang2645, 21.11.2013
I bought the device to play intros, separators or sound surfaces during live readings. An autarkic sampler with clearly assigned and, if necessary, "perceptible" keys was superior to a PC or tablet. In addition, the device is very favorable in comparison with other players and still fulfills its purpose.

However, I quickly had to recognize a couple of limitations that should be kept in mind during a similar assignment:

- The velocity dynamics can not be deactivated. If you want to play "only" samples with the same volume, you have to make sure that you are neatly on the pads, otherwise it is too quiet. So you can always hear when you knock on the device. A software update would be desirable in which the velocity dynamics can be switched off.

- All samples assigned to the 8 pads must not exceed 30 Mbytes and the WAV format is only possible. For drum sounds, this may be enough, but with Jingels and separators this can quickly become scarce. Here it only helps to encode the WAV files lower.

- Also, you should know that the samples of your own sample kits are always read from the card. This can also take quite a while with 20-second players. The samples are always re-read each time the kit is changed and when switching on and off. A fast change between two separate assignments is not possible because the device does not have an internal buffer. One should use at least a fast memory card. The internal assignments are immediately accessible.

Otherwise, the device on the stage is very good to use and reliable.
