Concert cymbals

Cymbals are an important part of any drum kit, whether you play Jazz, Reggae or Rock ‘n’ Roll. However, before we delve into their uses in popular music, we’d like to briefly mention their uses in concert and marching bands. Most cymbal companies offer cymbals specifically designed for orchestral and marching use. These cymbals are divided into two main

cymbals are used in pairs and are held by straps that pass through the hole in the centre of the cymbal; the cymbals are held, played and controlled with the strap.

DampTo reduce vibrations - in music this usually refers to the technique of reducing an instrument's vibrations and overtones by touching it in some way, to shorten the length of the note and deaden the timbre of the sound. For example, a percussionist may place the palm of his hand on the skin of a kettle drum, or a guitarist might use the wrist of his plectrum hand to rest against the strings. Also used to describe the effects of acoustic treatment.

Suspended Cymbals

The second most important type of concert cymbal is a suspended cymbal. These cymbals are suspended horizontally as on a modern drum kit. Suspended cymbals are usually played with felt covered mallets and these are useful for producing smooth sounding rolls and dramatic crescendos. Sometimes suspended cymbals are played with a steel triangle beater but since that can damage the cymbal, a nylon-tipped drumstick is sometimes substituted, which produces a brighter tone than a wood-tipped stick.

Marching bands use larger and often thicker cymbals primarily because they’re louder, and project further than thinner, smaller cymbals.
