Fabulous Strings
David3021 08.03.2015
When you open the string packet under the leaf it says "I was so happy I couldn't stop playing". OK no pressure then. I had heard about the Evah Pirazzi strings on various bass blogs and websites and after about 3 years with my last set of Pirastro hybrids I thought I would take a chance. Being a double bass player is a hard job. It looks easy and bass guitarists usually think it's a bit like playing a big acoustic but the wear and tear on muscles and fingers can be serious. I needed a hybrid string because I play jazz and also work with a couple of local orchestras. Some strings don't work for both.
These strings do. They feel light and slightly rubbery and it takes a few minutes to get the feel. The first thing I noticed was the sustain on the bottom strings. It sings beautifully. The attack on the pizzicato is wonderful and although these are not going turn you into Scott La Faro they are the nearest thing to gut you will find. Bowing is good. Certainly better than anything I have experienced before. I had to lighten up with the bow as the sound was so loud. Three days after fitting them I played Mahler 4 and I was delighted with the control I achieved. I bought the weich version of this string to help my fingers cope with an increased workload and I can heartily recommend these strings. OK I was so happy I couldn't stop playing....

For years I used Tomastik Spirocore (most recently, weich). I was reluctant to experiment as bass strings are so expensive. But a conversation a couple of years ago with a pro bassist persuaded me to try these. What I really noticed is the outstanding quality of vibrato sound from the G string with both arco and pizz.

Oh yes please!
Allen 30.12.2014
I purchased these at the same time as a Thomann 22 double bass. I decided to leave the strings that came with the bass on it for a week or so to see how I got on with them, and if I would notice the difference between them and the no-name pre-loaded jobbies. To say the difference is dramatic, is putting it mildly! ...

The first thing I noticed while stringing up is the Evahs were silkier under the finger, and once I had them tensioned, and mid-change between the two sets of strings, I noticed a very definite difference between the finish of the strings. The Evah is a much brighter metal, whereas the stock strings were that bit duller.

As an aside - here's a tip, if you are buying strings, don't forget (if you haven't got one already), to buy a specialised double-bass string winder! ... there is a very good one here on Thomann that's only a few quid but your wrists will very much thank you for the purchase!

So - once I had them all strung up and roughly in tune, I started some basic playing to stretch as I brought them into tune. The next thing that struck me was the far lower tension compared to the stock strings ... far far easier to play. And finally, once everything was in tune and I started some pizz and then arco, boy, was I blown away ... these strings gave a deep, full, rich sound that have made a huge difference to my bass ... I am extremely happy I coughed up the few extra quid (they are costly) ... these strings and I are going to have a long relationship. I am superbly pleased with my purchase, highly recommended!

Very versatile, and an excellent hybrid for jazz
Lloydy 22.02.2021
When I bought my bass it had some pretty heavy strings which were reasonable for pizz but terrible for Arco. Playing mostly jazz, I did want the option to bow occasionally. More recently, I have found myself playing bow for a number of folk/singer-singer tracks and the sound is great for that too. A lower tension than my previous string, making it much easier to play, but somehow with no loss of punch in the pizz. Arco sounds full and smooth, despite my mediocre technique. Can highly recommend for their versatility. Still sounding beautiful today, some 4 years later.
