Preamp or Channel Strip?

PreampAn amplifier device or circuit that provides initial amplification of a weak electronic signal, usually to 'line' level, in order for it to be processed or passed between other devices, as opposed to a power amp which amplifies a signal in order to drive loudspeakers. Examples include microphone preamps (as dedicated hardware and in mixing desks/recording interfaces) and guitar preamps. Most guitar amps combine the preamp and power amp in the same unit.

InsertA bi-directional connection to a mixer or other audio device enabling the signal to be diverted to an external device and then returned to a signal path. Mixer inserts are commonly used to add dynamics processing or EQ to individual channels before they reach the mix bus (as opposed to time based effects such as reverb where you only want to process part of the signal and therefore use an 'aux' send). Usually implemented with a TRS jack socket.

It is also true that the term ‘channel strip’ is often used by companies who actually make high-end mixers themselves, the implication being that while we may not be able to afford one of their mega-consoles, we can still have a small piece of one.
