Microphone preamps, in one form or another, are analogue devices that will remain important even as most other equipment is superseded by digital alternatives. There is no digital substitute for recording a good sound in the first place, no matter how you may choose to process it subsequently. It is therefore well worth understanding the importance of good micpreamps, and taking the time to work out which is best for your needs. The old saying, ‘rubbish in, rubbish out’ has perhaps never been more appropriate!
