Leuke dulcimer voor erbij of mee te beginnen

Deze dulcimer heb ik gekocht als 2e dulcimer voor onderweg. De dulcimer is wat kleiner dan de meeste dulcimers en goedkoop zodat mocht er onderweg iets aan stuk gaan dit wat minder erg is.

De bouwkwaliteit lijkt prima. Het geheel voelt stevig. Nette afwerking. Het boven- en onderblad zijn gelamineerd om de prijs te drukken denk ik.

De klank is goed. Maar niet zo vol en genuanceerd dan de grotere en duurdere dulcimers. Verwacht geen wonderen. De Roosebeck dulcimer die ik heb klinkt luider, voller en verfijnder.
De snaren stonden te hoog afgesteld waardoor het instrument niet fijn speelt. Zou wel fijn zijn als de brugkam +/-1,5mm lager van fabriek af kwam. Zeker voor beginners die niet hun eigen instrument durven af te stellen.

De meegeleverde tas is prima om het instrument tegen kleine stootjes te beschermen. Bied echter geen bescherming indien er iets zwaars op valt.

Een leuk instrument om uw eerste liedjes op te leren of als 2e of 3e instrument voor onderweg. Ik heb er in iedergeval veel plezier van.

Een dulcimer die doet wat een dulcimer moet doen, maar dan in een wat handzamer formaat, geluid is iets minder vol dan zijn grotere broertje

A mixed bag!

Positives first.
For its size and the fact it is made from laminated wood it has a good bright airy sound and a surprising amount of sustain. It s a good size starter instrument for a child or for travelling.

The negatives.
It will not stay in tune!
The machine heads appear to be of reasonable quality, but the bridge and nut material are not fit for purpose. The plastic is soft and the strings cut their own groove. Each time one tunes it they cut a little deeper, eventually, this will affect the height of the action and playability.
I have replaced the bridge with a piece of acrylic plastic from a ruler! Tuning is now stable and the sound has improved on the original set up.
Hora (the makers) need to improve their quality control. There was a crusty lump of finish (shellac) now polished out on the left side of the body which had gone unnoticed when it was packed, although there was an unsigned QC certificate was enclosed!
Perhaps Thomann staff should check the instruments before sending them out. And the buyers “kick ass” at Hora about the quality of finish and materials. After all it is Thomann’s reputation that is on the line.

For the price, it lived up to my expectations, which were, a beginners instrument, something on which a basic taste would be given and if the promise showed in the playing a more expensive model could be purchased. Well put together, and a good sound. The bottom end (bass part) played well, the higher notes did not ring out clearly, but the sense of the drone was overall good. Basically a nice instrument not for the experienced Dulcimer player, however, the price reflects that. I was satisfied with the product.
