The A Zildjian has come a long way over the past eight decades and these latest additions are sophisticated, sensitive and musical. Don't be put off by the lightweight tag, you only have to glance at them and they explode into life. They are extremely easy to get along with and make a valuable addition to the estimable A Zildjian family.

The A Zildjian has come a long way over the past eight decades and these latest additions are sophisticated, sensitive and musical. You only have to glance them and they explode into life. But dont be put off by the lightweight tag Matt Sorum plays them so they are by no means fragile wallflowers. I took three out on a gig last night and found the sound to be recognisably A Zildjian but with a clarity and brevity that buzzes with energy. They are extremely easy to get along with and make a valuable addition to the estimable A Zildjian family. These are the fastest, brightest and smoothest of the A Zildjian crashes and splashes, setting a new standard. The light weight inevitably brings a slight loss of body and power.

Zildjians A Custom range is full of crisp and sophisticated sounds, and the addition of the Fast splashes and crashes continues very much in this vein. The complexity of creating especially fast cymbals is evident among the bigger sizes, where an undertone begins creeping in, and in this respect its the smaller diameters that work best. The overall feel and function of the cymbals suggests that they are not destined for the loudest of musical situations. The instant punctuation they provide is suited to the sort of tight, funky drummer who requires precision over power. These are lean and modern sounding cymbals that are impressively quick without being harsh or cutting. While they are indeed fast, the emphasis on speed brings limits to their versatility with it.

Although heavier than the original A Customs, these mediumweight versions have lost little of the original fast attack and brightness. They are swift but full, and the effect they should have in a band context is of a bright, penetrating, splashy crash, with high volume and projection. The new Z Customs live up to the Z Custom credo of loud, raw and aggressive. I had great fun with the Thrash ride and was bowled over by the Projection crash. In such company the 14" made less of a splash. But thats just me it could be just what youre after a splash you can really lay into. New A Customs are louder than previous models, but still bright and attacking, and some Z Customs sound like nothing else. You need to choose carefully some of these cymbals
