Over the years, manufacturers have had a tricky time finding a middle ground between traditional single-function stompboxes and the various types of multi-effects units. In fact to be honest, very few have even tried, which is a shame as there are plenty of players who don’t feel comfortable at either extreme. We might love the tone and charm of retro stompboxes, but they’re not always practical for gigging where you want a simple, compact rig that’ll work perfectly every time. On the other hand, many of the multi-effects units don’t satisfy these requirements either; some are too complicated for gigs where you just need three or four good sounds, while others are just too compact, with insufficient scope for real-time control.
