I bought one unit first to try it out, and then I bought another one to use as a slave for recording 16 tracks at once. It works like a charm! You can record 8 tracks at once, 16 all in all. With two units, you get twice that. Easy set up and the controls are simple, like old Tascam units. This setup has completely replaced laptops etc. from my recording setup. Two inputs provide phantom power, nice to have when recording drums. Can be easily used for recording the entire band in a single session. If you know how to operate a cd-player, you'll have no problems using this. Keep in mind, the chassis is plastic (good quality though!), so do not mistreat your unit and it will last a long time. Zoom is a Japanese company, so you will get more features than you asked for. I haven't used any of the presets, but there are effects, presets and too many things to list here, software-wise. Build quality is excellent!

Simple and Versatile

A simple to use eight track recorder that produces faithful recordings in WAV onto SDHC card. My own use of the R16 is limited to recording only; I transfer the WAV files to PC and edit on freeware, so I can make no comment on ease or functionality of editing on R16. The built-in effects are a mixed bag of mediocrity, but as a clean and straightforward multitrack audio recorder the R16 is very acceptable.

Great for live recording

I got the R16 to use for recording (for release) my own band live and while doing this use it as a mixer for in ear monitoring, this works great, you can even use the effects like reverb for example and also pan the channels just for monitoring while you record the dry unaffected signal. Since the faders only affect the monitored sound not the recorded you can set your monitor mix with them and you set the recording volume with the gain knobs. The main limitation in monitoring if you want to use it for IEM is that you can have only one mix for all, but after all it wasnt really meant for IEM.

When not at gigs i also use it in the rehearsal studio pemanently connected/miced up to be able to just press record and make a live pre-production demo so that we can have a good listen to our songs/arrangements with great sound before making the final studio recording, this does require mixing down the 8 channels recorded of course if you want a stereo recording that you can distribute.

The R16 can do many things like acting as a DAW controller and USB DAW audio interface as well as the things i mentioned, you can even sync two R16 for 16 channel input standalone recording. I have only used it for live recording and monitoring and for that purpose i really love it. I am a bit tempted to get another one for 16 channel (input)recording, but more channels will mean longer setup time...
