The tonelab has now become a permanent member of the band three or four gigs a week no problems yet.
great sounds easy to use .
The Sound does change noticeable between amp and PA but easy to compensate for with a bit of work

I have been using Vox products for years. I have owned the Vox Tonelab LE in the past as well and I loved it! The EX is slightly more compact but built like a tank.

You can save up to 100 programs on this unit. It also comes with 50 song presets to instantly get those classic sounds from your favorite recordings. The digital reverbs, delays and wah effects are particularly good. In addition, you can choose from several cabinet types to round out the sound. To top it all off the unit is driven by a 12AX7 vacuum tube so the sound is warm and not 100% digital which can sometimes sound a bit canned.

All in all, I would highly recommend this multi-effects unit to anyone looking for quality sound in a well made casing that can easily stand up to stage performances.

good quality but not for everyone.

Build quality feel good.
There are plenty of good sounds. I haven't compared it with other units but certainly this unit sound authentic to my ears. Certainly there is a lot of tough competition from other manufacturers.

As with all multi effects units it can be a bit overwhelming. Too many options. Although this unit is easy enough to use and program. The ability to turn off the amp models and just use the stomp box effects is welcome if you playing into an amp that already has it's one "sound and character".

In the end i decided this product was just too much and I was better off with a couple a stomp boxes plus a dedicated multi-effects stomp box for experimenting with sounds I don't usually use. But for those wanting a fully feature multi effects unit this is as good a place to start as any.

Almost perfect

The ToneLab EX has a great range of sound combinations, from basic clean with a touch of reverb or just dry, to multifaceted sounds which are very complex,
all of this is achieved easily once you know the layout!
Some of the controls have dual functions which allows them to do two jobs by the press of an associated button, this keeps the amount of controls to a minimum but is also quite intuitive after some time changing settings.
The unit comes loaded with 100 presets which can not be altered in their present location but you can copy them to one of the 100 user programs (banks 1-25 x 4 programs in each bank) you can then edit the program to make your own sound, this makes it quicker to find what your after if the program is already close!
Their are too many effects to mention them all here but one of my favourite types is the Wah Wah and Auto Wah they work very well and are great fun to play with.
The unit is solid and appears rugged though time will tell on this point, it has a miniature Triode 12AX7 in the power amp circuit which gives the "orange glow" through vents in the casing, I don't know how much effect this has on the sound but I am a valve amp person rather than solid state so this makes it feel better.
You can achieve screaming sustain with a lot of feel and warmth, when picking harder you get more bite so it is more expressive to play through, if your a shredder, I'm sure you'll find a sound that fits the bill.
I use the ToneLab EX through a "Fender Vaporizer" as it is a very basic single channel valve amp with more than enough volume for any back line (unless you want hearing damage) and the sound is very impressive.
It has one output which goes straight to the guitar amp's input, mixer or head phones.
There is a four position selector switch for the output which "tunes the sound" to suit what you are using, these are Vox - F (Fender) M (Marshall) and Line, (you can use any amp but these are the standards)
When using headphones I find the "line setting" is best as the others take some degree of top end away.
One negative point is the bank selection foot buttons don't have a fast scroll function, you have to hit the button to make one bank change, this is a bit tedious when moving from low banks to high or vice versa, a press and hold fast scroll would have been better, this shouldn't be a problem when performing as you are only likely to use maybe four or five banks (you can get quite fast when dancing on the buttons though)
Another feature that would complete the unit would be a removable protection cage for the buttons so as to avoid accidental damage to the controls by the user or members of an audience.
All in all a very good effects unit that is keenly priced.
