I bought one unit first to try it out, and then I bought another one to use as a slave for recording 16 tracks at once. It works like a charm! You can record 8 tracks at once, 16 all in all. With two units, you get twice that. Easy set up and the controls are simple, like old Tascam units. This setup has completely replaced laptops etc. from my recording setup. Two inputs provide phantom power, nice to have when recording drums. Can be easily used for recording the entire band in a single session. If you know how to operate a cd-player, you'll have no problems using this. Keep in mind, the chassis is plastic (good quality though!), so do not mistreat your unit and it will last a long time. Zoom is a Japanese company, so you will get more features than you asked for. I haven't used any of the presets, but there are effects, presets and too many things to list here, software-wise. Build quality is excellent!

Simple and Versatile

A simple to use eight track recorder that produces faithful recordings in WAV onto SDHC card. My own use of the R16 is limited to recording only; I transfer the WAV files to PC and edit on freeware, so I can make no comment on ease or functionality of editing on R16. The built-in effects are a mixed bag of mediocrity, but as a clean and straightforward multitrack audio recorder the R16 is very acceptable.

Brilliant value and sound quality

I bought this studio to replace my old 16 track machine which was getting old. This was a fraction of the price of my old system but is actually much superior in sound quality and ease of use. The on-board condenser mics are great at this price point and I use them when recording acoustic guitar. The menus are easy to navigate and the whole system is intuitive and straightforward to use. Sending the sound files to laptop is a breeze with the included USB cable. I only have two minor issues with the system. Firstly the Zoom only came with a 2 pin plug so I needed to get a 3 pin adaptor (although these are cheap and readily available from most hardware shops). The other more pressing issue is that I found on my Zoom is that if you rename the sound files on your laptop when it is still connected to the Zoom (in card reader mode) when you next load the project you cannot play the sounds you renamed through the Zoom (but they are still there in card reader mode and are not deleted). Fortunately you can get around this by not renaming the original sound file names, but you will have to remember which file is which! I'm not sure if this issue is limited to only my Zoom. This is only a minor problem and should not detract from the fact that overall this is a superb bit of kit and brilliant value for money with superb sound quality.

This is my favorite product that i have ever bought. I use it as a stand alone recorder, as an interface for Cubase and sometimes as a mixer at practice. The portability of the R16 is a great selling point and the features are great. The two phantom power channels were also a big selling point for me when i got this. i have used this to record live 3 piece bands also at clubs with great success, defiantly the most used and loved product i have ever got. The only things i would change is that they could make the outputs like the inputs so you could use XLR or 1/4 Jack and also make the headphone out a little louder. Only very minor things though.
