Having used the Yamaha DXR and DSR tops for a year, I decided to give a go to the subs, too. Overall, good subs, very well built, but they don't impress as much as the tops did. Features are mostly good, got some good handles, a pole socket, volume knob, phase switch and inputs and outputs for left and right channels. What's missing, however, is a switchable crossover, instead it is fixed at 120hz. It is supposed to use this Fir-x crossover network technology with the tops, so maybe it is because of that. But it limits the usage with other systems. Handling is very good. I have seen lighter subs, but I also have seen a lot more heavier. Handles are good, setting it up is quick and easy. Sound-wise, it is a warm and clear sub with just the right amount of punch for my taste. Really nice tone. However, it could play a tad lower. I don't mean the sound is not good, it is. Doing pub gigs with the DXR tops, I have gotten countless compliments for the sound, they really do sound nice and full, they just don't seem to fully satisfy the hiphop and dnb DJ's. SPL wise, they seem to hold their own with 12" DSR-s when paired, a single one will just about keep up with the DXR tops, and no problems with other less powerful speakers.
As is always the case with Yamaha, it is built like a tank. The design I like a lot. I have no doubt it will serve for ages. Overall, I am pleased with it and I will likely buy some more. Just not as overwhelmed as I was with the tops. Edit: so I recently subjected these subs to a terrible amount of abuse from a DJ and I'll tell you this much, Yamaha sure knows how to make limiters and protection circuits.
