A lovely bit of work

When I first opened the box I was amazed at the quality of the instrument, the wood was beautiful, the craftsmanship was beautiful and the finish was perfect. It took me a while to set up properly since I was a novice at the double bass, but it wasn't too big of a chore, the body had a little mark on it to show where the bridge went (I don't know if this is on all of them, like I said the double bass is new to me).

My only complaint is that the pin got bent very easily even though I was extremely careful not to lift the bass up on it, and it's extremely difficult to pull out the pin by hand now.

The main thing is the bass still plays beautifully and looks even more beautiful. A table or chair made with this quality and attention to detail would be more expensive than this. It a really beautiful instrument

I grow increasingly more happy with every passing day, having bought myself this bass over a year ago. It came with a german bow, which I've not had much use for, but also with a gig-bag, polish and two cloths. The set-up seemed professional, and there were clear (though permanent) markings as to where I should place the bridge when it arrived. Tuning up, I took time to left the strings settle but I suppose I must have rushed it a little, for the D string snapped in the process. I phoned Thomann right away and they shipped out a replacement string immediately, making absolutely no fuss, and it was with me within 5 days.
Shipping for the bass itself was also fairly quick, and professionally dealt with.
The bass? Among laymen it's revered for it's beauty, and for some reason I always mention how cheap I got it for. Honestly, it sounds lovely at my level of playing, with a full tone up to thumb position. Pizzicato is also very effective on the bass, and I have used it amplified on a number of occasions, constantly complimented on its sound. I would recommend it to another beginner in a heartbeat. It sounds leagues better than the basses I've played in schools and even at my university.

I have had this double bass for a few years now and have gigged it regularly. I swapped the strings for Weedwackers and then changed them back to the stock steel strings because they sounded so much better.

This bass is amazing value for money, especially if you are getting free delivery. Mine came on a sturdy woodenpallet which was higher than the my front door. It comes with a soft gig bag, which is all you need if you are shifting it around in your (estate) car.

I play country mostly and some rock and roll on this - it does the job admirably. The acoustic sound is mellow enough and, for gigs, I use a K & K pre amp system, which works well through a normal bass amp or a large P A system.

This bass has a very nice authentic aged look about it, with its dull varnish and very traditional looking brass tuning keys. It is highly playable and it stays in tune; two very big considerations when it come to budget instruments. All in all ,an excellent buy.

Cheap but not very good

Though the bass is cheap and aimed for beginners its quality does intonation hard for a beginner, especially if you're playing with a bow. The fingerboard is not even close to have a consistent curvature in order to intonate or not to have have buzzing tones here and there playing pizzicato. Sound is uneven and (most noticeable playing pizzicato). It is not worth spending money fixing the curvature on this bass.
If your goal is to make some sounds and you can accept that intonation will be tough here and there then it's ok. But if you want an instrument making it easier to learn and also grow by as you progress, then you better off saving your money for a better instrument.
