This Works

Got this because I have a small room and not much space for treating the room fully. This Mic screen does the job perfectly. Can totally hear the difference using it. Would recommend it. It was easy to put together and includes the stereo bar setup. It is also adjustable should your singer have an extremely large head. Because lets be fair. They usually do! :)

Solid Performer - a 'go to' bit of kit.
Anonymous 02.06.2016
I delayed my review until I've actually used this mic screen in anger. I've been making home recordings for some years and never used a dedicated mic screen before this. I've jury rigged blankets, duvets, cardboard - all sorts - to make vocal booths on the fly when the room has proved to be a bit 'lively' with ok results. I wouldn't say the mic screen produced significantly better results than those makeshift baffles but it is a lot quicker and easier to set up. My only reservation is that it is quite heavy, so when clamped on a mic stand it can make the stand unstable if it does not have a sufficiently heavy or widespread base. All that said, since I've had it I don't think I've recorded any vocals without it in place. It's a 'go to' bit of kit.

Good but a little too heavy
Anonymous 24.03.2015
Generally, I like it. It does do what it is supposed to. The key (but not dramatic) drawback that I find is too much metal and hence too big weight. If you are to mount it on a microphone stand (and this is really the only option), it has to be pretty stable to begin with. I believe the construction might have been simpler, lighter and smaller _not_ at the expense of functionality. I would also prefer if the lower edge of the assemply did not have a protruding part that prevents the whole screen to be placed simply on a table or another surface (for example, this could be helpful when used with a desktop mike). If I were to buy a mic screen again, I would probably be looking for alternatives. Nonetheless, the things does its job well and, luckily, the extra weight of the screen is not so much a problem as I have a very stable K&M mike stand that holds the assembly very nicely.

Why Spend More?
TomC94 15.05.2013
The SE mic screens are almost IDENTICAL to this so why bother spending double the money? I use this regularly for recording vocals and it does exactly what it says on the tin! It has one one or two occasions fallen to bits because of knocks and bangs it has received but it is easy to put back together.

t.bone micscreen
Maddogg Marr 21.02.2014
I have used this mic screen for about a year now so it has been well tested. While I don't own the more expensive screens from SE electronics, I have used them and this model compares well. The build quality is quiet good and it cut down on room reflections very well which is all it's meant to do really. So, compared to its more expensive counterparts, it represents great value for money.
The main criticism I have is the clamp that holds it on to the mic stand could be a little bigger in diameter, as I have it on a standard upright stand on the slim part and it just barely holds on by a few threads.
Also, I recommend that you use a very solid stand with a wide heavy base as it can become very top heavy and unbalanced with this and a mic attached. I hope you find this helpful, cheers.

A simply fantastic alternative to a purpose built vocal booth
Denis946 16.07.2014
The t-bone mic screen is absolutely excellent. It does an excellent job at dissipating reflections when used and really helps to remove the room in which you are recording in.

Not a particularly complicated piece of equipment, the only thing to really take into account is that it is a top heavy mechanism so the stand you require for it to safely stand around your microphone would need to be a sturdy one with a proper centre of balance.

I have used this unit on many many records and I have had extremely clean results every time.

It is particularly useful in a single room production environment, where there is potential for unnecessary noise.

Definitely recommend this piece of equipment, a great asset to any home production or commercial studio.

Effective enough to make it worth it
Jack G. 14.05.2013
The t.bone micscreen is a foam lined foldable aluminium micscreen. It is cheaper than some of the other options available, but I can't compare the different brands.

I've tested the t.bone micscreen on a few sources within a reflective room, but it has certainly impressed me.

The microphone stand mounting assembly is unnecessarily complicated, making setting up the mic screen quite time consuming, which has made me have to leave it out of some tight sessions I've done.

Nevertheless, with the mic in the mic screen, it is reasonably well protected from spill and room sound. Mics behind the mic screen pick up far less direct sound from sources on the other side of the screen, meaning that spill comes more from reflections, meaning a more diffuse spill and less chance of comb filtering. I also tested for comb filtering between the sound of my vocal and the reflected sound off the foam by using an omnidirectional mic in the micscreen and moving my head around as I sung. I could not detect any comb filtering in this way, which was a relief, as some people claim this is a problem with such products.

It is not a one stop solution to stopping spill or creating isolation, but it is effective and seems to have no adverse effects. Though it is time consuming to set up, I would recommend it.

Get a proper mic stand to support it!
RZz 11.12.2020
Great product for its price that does have a very noticable effect (depends how bad the reflections are in the room. If you record in different places - it's easy to take with you and worry less about the sound at the location.
Cons: It is a bit heavy and needs a good quality mic stand to support it if you don't want to see your precious condenser mic crashes with it.
Pros: If it does crash with it - at least it would sound better crashing, with less room reflections

Good solution to get rid of room sound
witchmaster 05.02.2014
This mic screen is really good and removes most of the room sound giving you a good dry sound for further processing. Cheaper than some other brands but it's ok built and I haven't had any problems with it.

For the home budget studio
Anonymous 15.09.2015
This screen is really for the budget home recordist who has a room or rooms that have reflections that are out of control and affect the recording too much. It helps to isolate your vocals for example giving them a more dry sound with much less room colouration. It is well made for its price, nothing flimsy about it in my experience. The clamps are useful and sturdy.

It will deaden the sound somewhat and won't tame or absorb any bass/lower frequencies, but so will all of these micscreens except maybe the higher-end SE Pro, or so they claim, I've never used it. Useful in a pinch.
