    Omnisphere - Well Worth It

I know Omnisphere has been out for years, but I'd had mainly hardware synths in that time. I still have a Triton Extreme & when I started to look deeper into more modern virtual instruments (after I'd purchased Protools 10), I couldn't believe how capable they were - providing you have a reasonably specified PC (I've a 64Bit OS, 8GB RAM, 2 X 1.5TB Hard Drives, Intel Quad Core CPU etc..).

Omnisphere has an incredible amount of usable & inspirational (that's really helpful) sounds right out of the box. Installation & setup was very straightforward.

I find I'm using the hardware synth less & this virtual instrument more & more. Its a stunnnig & well thought out & relatively easy to use software package. All credit to Spectrasonics for all the hard work & effort they obviously have put into this product.

I was so impressed with it, that I ended up purchasing Stylus RMX & then Trilian (2 other Spectrasonics packages). So I'm now exploring all 3 packages to get used to using them & learning to how exploit them fully - but I'm also able to quickly make demos & get musical ideas down without being bogged down in technical workings of things. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of technical digging you can do in terms of editing, changing existing sounds - but many are already so useable, you'll may find it hard to stop playing them - particularly some of the guitars!

I'll be keeping a close eye on Spectrasonics from now on, eager to see what they have in store next. I'm sure I'll be upgrading to Omnisphere's successor without hesitation (providing my existing hardware will work with it ;-))

Note that I like ambient, movie score, textured, synth type sounds. I wasn't looking for clean, killer pianos or more regular sounds - although there's great choirs, strings, some piano type sounds in Omnisphere. If you are very specifically looking for one or more particular traditional instruments - make sure you get them with Omnisphere otherwise it might not be the appropriate choice for you.

    Highly recommended.

One synth to rule them all....

If any musician with about £300 to spare(!) asked me what they should spend it on, I would point them in the direction of this instrument. I had been watching online demo videos of Omnisphere for a few months, before I decided to treat myself for my 40th birthday. Needless to say, I'm very glad I did. :)

In terms of what you get for your money, this is definitely good value. The amount of sounds you get are staggering, in terms of quality AND quantity. The interface is very clean and easy to navigate, so you can just get on and enjoy the preset sounds or you can get into deeper editing via a few clicks of your mouse. The editing/patch creation side of Omnisphere is not overwhelming and you can get some great results very quickly and easily. Spectrasonics have very useful tutorial videos on their website to get you up and running, if you're a beginner to creating your own sounds.

A couple of my favourite features are being able to sort sounds by rating, or store your favourite sounds in project folders for easy recall later - saves trawling through 8000 patches! :)

Every sound I played gave me inspiration; one thing I did notice was the lack of tradition sounds in the library, but trust me this is no bad thing. One of the purposes of this instrument is to get you thinking outside the box, sonically speaking and find refreshing alternatives - thus giving your music a unique edge. Thanks to some extensive psycho-acoustic sound design, be prepared to spend at least 30 minutes playing some of these sounds - look out for a patch called 'Glorious Guitar' and you'll find out what I mean. With over 40GB's of sounds, you're definitely going to find something usable!

Installing the instrument didn't take as long as some people reported; for me, it took about 30 minutes, which isn't unreasonable, considering how extensive the sound library is. This synth isn't for the faint hearted of computers - you'll need something pretty robust if you want to use more than one instance of it in your DAW; my system is windows 7, with an i3 dual core processor and 4GB of Ram and it can handle 2 tracks of Omnisphere in Cubase AI5 at the same time, so that should give you an idea....

The 'Live Mode' is truly an inspiration station! You can have up to 8 sounds running at one time, with arpeggiators and a 'latch mode' so as soon as you have a sequence you like, you can then switch over/browse for something else to start jamming over the top with - for live work, it's a game changer.

Overall, I can honestly say that it's one of the best pieces of music software I have bought. It's a solid piece of kit - very reliable; hasn't crashed on me yet. Don't just take my word for it though, go and have a listen/see for yourself and take the plunge and buy it - that's what overdrafts are for. ;)

This product is top quality and still excites me after lengthy usage.
It's a really large download but functions perfectly across all of my machines from XP through to Windows 7.
The interface is very user-friendly, the effects are extraordinary and my only quibble is that there are few updates- so far. Recommended
