I've been tekking guitar amps for quite a while..and built some of my own. I select valves based on "in amp" measurements and my ears. I've recently started doing fixes for a local guitar/amp shop and have quite a few amps in for a fix. Testing valves in amp takes ages..I bought the VT1000 in the hopes it would help make thing easier and quantifiable....I started with my own amps and stock....It's like "psychotester".. preamp valves I'd picked for low gain came out lower ...valves picked for PI came out matched..power amp pairs/quads picked for in amp measurement matching came out matched...I'm impressed! I was however scared to death when the thing refused to let me change valve type..stuck on EL34...so I tried holding down the selector button and then powering up...which seems to have sorted it..phew! I'm now at the stage where I can feel like I trust the measurements..First thing with an amp through the door is a VT1000 check on the valves..so far a couple of failed valves it would have taken me a while ( poking around high volts) to find...and enabled selection of balanced preamp valves for PI. So far my customers have been delighted! Best thing is it's idiot proof!.. I get them to test their own valves while I check other stuff!..They love it!

A worthwhile addition to my equipment.

As somebody who builds and fiddles with valve amps, a valve tester was on my list of 'Stuff to buy' list. The traditional valve testers can be quite daunting and I felt required a degree of skill to operate and interpret the results.
Enter the VT1000.
Very simple to use and gives results in just over a minute for most valves.
Whilst not a cheap piece of gear, it has a sturdy metal case and ceramic sockets.
As has been mentioned by a few over people, it's a shame it doesn't test rectifier valves and a few other of the lesser known types. The design has limited it to the most common types which will suit most people.
Overall I'm very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone who's 'into' valve technology.
Five stars for quality but four stars total due to the limited range of valves that can be tested.
