I have to admit, I do not like Martin Strings. As much as I like their guitars, though, their strings are not what I prefer. With one noticeable exception: the Martin Silk and Steel.
If you have a lightly built OM or a smaller or even vintage guitar and you feel that the pull of the strings is possibly too much for that delicate (or vintage) instrument, you basically have two options. Go for light or extra light strings - but the overall reduction in pull and the lack of vibrating mass in the string itself will lead to a thin sound and due to the thinner strings you might even have to dial in a higher action to prevent snaring. It sounds wrong, but in fact you will have to raise the action with lighter strings on acoustic guitars. Or, you go for a more balanced set of strings that balances pull and mass in favour of an overall soft but better manageable sound.
Martins Silk&Steel have standard gauge blank strings paired up with wound strings that are not would over a core of steel but much like nylon strings over a core of silk. So you pair bass strings that still have a reasonable mass with the lighter pull of nylons. Seems like a win-win situation, especially for fingerstyle players and due to the higher mass of the treble strings it is, but there is a downside to it. The Silk&Steel last as long as any other non-coated Martin string, which is not that long.
But apart from that, the Martin Silk and Steel are my favourite strings on my fingerstyle guitar.
Now, just add SP coating to the Silk and Steel, that would be an idea....
