The tones you can get out of this amp are great and everything you'd expect out of a marshall but the one thing i dislike about it is the foot switching. theres a classic gain channel with a clean setting and a crunch setting and an ultra gain channel with a lead 1 setting and a lead 2 setting but you can only switch between the 2 channels and not the settings in between which i would find a lot more useful as i usually play on the classic gain and want to switch between the clean and crunch settings but cant without pressing the button on the front of the amp (first world problems :) ) but besides that its great value for money and you get that authentic marshall tube sound with a great celestion speaker as well. I'd recommend it for practicing and rehearsals because its great sounding and relatively small, but if you play in a similar manner to myself and would just use one channel and want to switch settings, I'd recommend saving up and getting the Marshall JVM205C although its twice the price of the DSL40c so id say try it out for yourself and see, its definitely worth a shot since overall it sounds fantastic.

Marshall DSL40C: excellent amp

My first Marshall amp, and I regret I had not buy it before. The sound one gets is the "real" hard rock and punk sound I was looking for, however this also produces nice bluesy tones. EQ controls are actually doing the job, with a good sensitivity scale. Reverb is minimal, but for rock this is OK, and anyway the effects loop is available if one looks for delay/ slapback. Handling; I would have preferred two side handles instead of a single central one on top, as this unit is heavy. I guess two additional handles can be fixed to the housing. I switch between the classic gain-crunch mode and the ultra gain-lead1 mode, gain around 9 o' çlock, volume set between 1 and 2 (in a small room). I use the first mode for general practice, classic rock and blues, the second for the extra kick e.g. Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols, AC/DC. Very rewarding sounds out of this unit! The footswitch is OK and essential. Of course one could ask for more, e.g. separate EQ for the two channels, headphone output (this actually I miss a bit, thats why the 4 stars only) but I guess Marshall delivered an absolutely excellent product for an affordable price, so any complaint should not be made.
update after 3 months of use: the amp started to develop a cracking noise when turned off (even without any guitar plugged in). This has worsen with time, plus a humming noise has added. Very disappointed I have now return it to Thomann who will see if the problem can be found and if it is covered by warranty. I have several amps - all cheaper than this, and never had such problem.
