Every other 6v6 tubed amplifier is around 15 watts with a Fender oddball running 22. 10 watts + 10" speaker is a little too convenient. Maybe they don't want it to eat into sales of the 12? Anyway, a simple to operate amp with real drive behind it, belying the 10 watt claim. Darker and much cleaner in tone than an el84 equipped amp, it evokes many Fender and 70's classic rock tones. It doesn't really do bright and chime, but it does do very good cleans through classic rock and really sings with smoky, smokin' blues. Through an external 1x12" and it shows the limitations of the stock HH speaker, which while not bad, is nothing special. Not worth replacing it though as terms such as 'muffled','woffly' or 'harsh' don't apply. It is still a stock 10" in what is after all a small cab. Loud is a term through the cab. As is controlled, driven, ballsy and present. This is a very 'present', touch sensitive amplifier and it is a pleasure to stand in front of it and make my guitar make some very nice sounds indeed. Control wise, there is a ( pre-amp ) gain, a ( master ) volume and a tone control which Laney say is more a 'light and dark' control. On/off, hi-lo inputs and a power indicator complete the sparse panel. You don't need more. At the moment, I'm mostly playing poppy/grungey/ska-punk with plenty of 70's type classic rock noodlings thrown in. It copes very well with crunched cleans. Sometimes, I smooth it out with some jazzy inspired lines and a roll off of the volume and tones on the guitar means I'm there in a second. Very versatile and responsive. It doesn't do \m/ metal and neither do I. Any attempt at a modern metal tone is met with amp disdain. Whilst it takes pedals well up to a point, this is one I'd advise metallers to avoid. Everyone else, dig in and enjoy.

Great small combo choice
I bought this combo for the following reasons so bear this in mind whilst reading my review: as a small recording amp live on stage mic'ed up and sent through the pa for quieter rehearsals and writing a lightweight combo for travelling with
Fit and finish Unboxing this amp with it's retro (but not ott) design, I was fairly impressed but a few things show cost cutting The chicken head knobs are a bit cheap looking; the tolex on mine is finished to an ok standard, the laney logo is rather cheesy, the handle is quite good rubber but I don't predict a long life, the corner protectors are the black plastic type and not perfectly installed. These are pretty small factors here though. The combo is however nice and light for carrying around and seems very solidly put together for its weight.
Sound Pro's Well...really nice. Out of the box, with single coils, it was a good rich sound, impressive at low volume with an American scoop to it. Cranking it up, you can get some very modern sounding preamp distortion over to classic sounding power break up. Simple and versatile, you have a tone conrol (more like a tone cut), volume (to the power tubes) and gain (preamp). There are low and high gain inputs but my favourite is to use the volume at full and use the gain with input 1 to control the output. That way I get some very bluesy, on the edge distortion.
Cons The speaker probably isn't the best in the world but really not that bad - I have decided to live with it for a while. The baffle wasn't fully screwed down, resulting in some nasty buzzes but that was an easy fix. The installed ruby tubes are a bit brash in my opinion so I swapped v1 for a British made nos 12ax7 and the sound is a bit richer but it's a very subjective complaint. I'll be changing the other tubes too but it's not necessary - just personal bias.
Overview All in all, for the purposes I bought it for, it does a great job at half the price of the famous American 10" combo I was going to buy.
