Great small combo choice

I bought this combo for the following reasons so bear this in mind whilst reading my review:
as a small recording amp
live on stage mic'ed up and sent through the pa
for quieter rehearsals and writing
a lightweight combo for travelling with

Fit and finish
Unboxing this amp with it's retro (but not ott) design, I was fairly impressed but a few things show cost cutting
The chicken head knobs are a bit cheap looking; the tolex on mine is finished to an ok standard, the laney logo is rather cheesy, the handle is quite good rubber but I don't predict a long life, the corner protectors are the black plastic type and not perfectly installed. These are pretty small factors here though.
The combo is however nice and light for carrying around and seems very solidly put together for its weight.

Well...really nice. Out of the box, with single coils, it was a good rich sound, impressive at low volume with an American scoop to it. Cranking it up, you can get some very modern sounding preamp distortion over to classic sounding power break up. Simple and versatile, you have a tone conrol (more like a tone cut), volume (to the power tubes) and gain (preamp). There are low and high gain inputs but my favourite is to use the volume at full and use the gain with input 1 to control the output. That way I get some very bluesy, on the edge distortion.

The speaker probably isn't the best in the world but really not that bad - I have decided to live with it for a while.
The baffle wasn't fully screwed down, resulting in some nasty buzzes but that was an easy fix.
The installed ruby tubes are a bit brash in my opinion so I swapped v1 for a British made nos 12ax7 and the sound is a bit richer but it's a very subjective complaint. I'll be changing the other tubes too but it's not necessary - just personal bias.

All in all, for the purposes I bought it for, it does a great job at half the price of the famous American 10" combo I was going to buy.

One of my first forays into tube amps, good basic components and very well constructed, not a panel or screw out of place and no rattling or loose parts in evidence. Quite good tonally, a good template for bedroom jamming and it takes pedals well. Doesn't have it's own flavour like a small Fender would and the controls are basic but it's still very satisfying.

Great little tube amp!

Total rating

The Laney Cub10 has proven to be a solid little amp. I was really surprised at the tone and volume you can get from this amp.

I play a G&L ASAT Tribute Special and the tone from the single coil pickups through this amp are amazing. The controls are basic (volume, tone & gain) but you don't need a lot to get a great sound. For such a small 10 watt amp you can get a fair amount of volume out of it. I have played it in a small pub with a drummer and it faired OK but it could really stand to be mic'd up to bring it out front of a full band. The only thing missing would be built in reverb but that is available on the Cub12R.

If you'd like a solidly built class A/B tube amp that is portable and easy on the wallet I would highly recommend the Laney Cub series!
