Essential purchase for the 12 step
Woodinblack 23.02.2015
The 12 step (and I assume the soft step) works fine if you want to plug it into a laptop, which is easy enough at home or in some venues, but if you play pubs / clubs where you might not want to take a laptop, you probably just want to plug it into your keyboard or synth module. This is what this device does.
Its a little metal box, plug your 12 step in one plug, usb power into the other plug and connect the midi out to the midi in of your module / synth. Then press the pedals and make sound. There are no controls or settings in the module itself, it is effectively transparant in use.
The box is tiny and pretty robust (I have stepped on it). It comes with the (very long) leads you need to use it and the 12 step (unlike the 12 step) as well as a generic 5v USB power supply.

Not really much more you could add to this - if you have a 12 step, you pretty well need it, so it is good that it is so well made.

Does what it's supposed to.
WillO 12.01.2014
I bought one of these so I could use my KMI SoftStep and QuNexus to control and play synth modules without a computer. For example, I can now use the SoftStep to play synth with my feet while my hands are busy playing guitar.
It works exactly as it should, simply connect it up, plug it in and you're good to go. It's very small and light with a metal case, it should stand up to being gigged regularly. Makes my existing KMI gear even more multi-functional.

Works well with one slight drawback
Tauzero 17.08.2022
As far as MIDI conversion goes, it's fine, sending standard MIDI from a McMillen 12-step. Maybe it's just me, but being able to power it from 9V/12V (eg. standard guitar pedal power supply) as well as USB would be useful.

A
Simple but effective
Anonymous 13.12.2014
This is a simple device yet is very effective if one is running something like a KMI Soft-step and say, a usb audio interface with no MIDI port. It enables the addition of an extra MIDI device if so desired. Does what it says on the tin!

Brilliant solution

With this clever box QuNeo can work without a computer. I don't think any other pad has that possibility. I use this to connect the pad to my lighting desk that have midi in.

Useful additional functionality for the SoftStep
Anonymous 30.05.2016
The Midi-Expander is a simple, small and very light little box that adds the ability for your SoftStep to talk to MIDI devices without going through your computer first. It has to be plugged in to power, and it then provides power to the SoftStep too.

I use it with a Roland EV-5 expression pedal plugged in to the SoftStep; using the Midi-Expander allows me to merge the SoftStep's output with other MIDI controllers that have no USB functionality.

In any situation where you need your SoftStep to work with conventional MIDI, rather than USB, this box provides the option and works fine.
