The best budget 7-string
P Ludwig 12.10.2022
This is my third Harley Benton purchase (the first was the 8-string version of this guitar, the second was the WL-20 as a gift for my girlfriend), and while I think 8-strings are fun, I felt like I would get the most utility from 7 instead. I knew exactly where to look, since Harley Benton has satisfied every time. On the last two purchases, there was a pretty significant chunk taken out of each one. The R458 was missing a part of the headstock, the WL was missing a chunk on one of the bottom horns, and while neither affected functionality or sound, it was still disheartening since I know I ordered both new. That was not the case with this guitar, I'm not sure if the packaging is different or if the carriers are doing better about it, but this guitar showed up in mint physical condition. Tuning was rough of course, but it was shipped halfway across the world so that's to be expected. I'm very particular about the strings I like (D'addario EXL 10-59), so once I changed the strings and oiled the fretboard it was finally time to give it a fair judgment.

Tuning stability:
Overall the tuning is pretty solid. The strings needed stretched, but once that's done it wasn't too bad at keeping tune. I found that it can sometimes be hard to find the exact sweet spot for being in tune, mostly because it's a low tuning, but I feel like the tuners could be just a little more precise. But considering the price point, you could get much worse.
Playability and setup:
The setup was really good straight from the box! Most cheap guitars only seem "bad" because they're rushed from a factory, but even the cheapest craigslist guitars can be brought back to life. The Harley Benton didn't need that though, they got it pretty close at the start. The 3rd string saddle was a bit high, but that's a really easy fix and after that it plays perfectly. The neck is also great, thin so it's easy to fly around, but it's still thick enough to have some substance, which is a good balance for a 7 string.
Comfort:
The guitar is really light, but still feels solid. The neck is slightly heavy (I think that's where most of the weight is), but it doesn't dive. It's probably a good thing that the neck is heavy, for tuning and structural reasons. I've stood up for hours playing this guitar and not felt any pain whatsoever.
Sound:
The most conflicting point here. The pickups sound good; I assume most looking at this guitar are looking to play heavier/progressive styles of metal, and it not only excels for those tones, but can do some good lower-gain and clean stuff too. All pickup positions sound great. The only real issue is that the pickups are a little microphonic. My amp (a Marshall Valvestate) isn't very high-gain, my other guitars don't have feedback issues, but this one squeals left and right at anything above a lower practice volume. There's some DIY fixes, but it's something you'd expect most manufacturers to handle when it comes to potting pickups. You can use a noise gate, but sometimes you still get feeback before the gate kicks in, and it's a little frustrating. Neither of the other Harley Benton guitars I have are microphonic, so it could just be a bad set that I got. For recording purposes it's not so much of an issue, but for any practices or live shows it might be something to keep an eye out for.

Overall:
Like the title says, this is the best budget-priced 7-string guutar you can find, even if it's overseas. I was able to get this guitar and a few other things from Thomann, delivered to midwest USA, for around $160. That's less than some budget 7-strings available HERE, and the level of quality you're getting is probably the same if not better. I will always recommend Harley Benton to musicians of any skill and budget level. I love this guitar!

A Shock to the system!
ISBM 18.08.2016
No, not because of the low rumble of this beast through my Blackstar, but because you spend you whole time as a guitar playing being told "you get what you pay for" and then someone goes and makes this!

As the previous reviews seem to also confirm, this was bought to trial being a 7 string owner without hurting the bank balance and, to mimic the others, I am very impressed.

Build Quality & Hardware
No complaints. It feels sturdy with a chunky body (helps to conterweight that wide neck) and very good recessed neck joint. The neck is thin for a 7 string (I've played others but never owned one) and unfinished. Personally I'd rather have an oiled or painted finish, but this is preference and will be solved when I have space on my workbench. Pickups? Not great. By no means the worst for a guitar of this cost, but they lose clarity at the low end and lack the depth of better made counterparts. Sound great clean and higher up though! Controls are noiseless and free moving.

The real shocker:
This beauty is set up like a pro! The action was spot on, the intonation near-perfect and straight out the box (in the UK) she played like a dream. The biggest issue I find with cheap guitars is they need a decent set up to be playable but this is an exception. Thomann have put their name to this and will not be losing any reputation with such a great starter priced guitar.

Now, where's that black paint and Seymour Duncan Nazgul?...

Cheap Meal
gh99 20.02.2021
I am impressed with my R-457. For less than the cost of a decent meal out you get a 7-string monster which is amazing value. I bought this guitar, as I suspect most will, to play around with the 7-string concept.

I found no flaws in the finish of mine.

The pickups are very decent. If not the greatest sounding they are perfectly adequate, have the right voicing for this kind of guitar and can create some decent tones. Obviously you shouldn't expect to get a great jazz tone from them but you can get some reasonable gentler tones by dialling the tone and volume down.

The neck has a very nice satin finish. Very smooth and easy to work with. The fretboard wasn't obviously dry, as others have been, although i will treat it and probably change the strings at some stage. The Kiesel-ish headstock is nicely done, too.

Every other one of my seven HBs has 10s on it. This one has 9s. Hooray! On the down side they aren't the d'Addarios you get on other models.

I have only found two minor things to mention, so far:
-one of the neck screws is installed poorly and doesn't sit flush with the neck. This kind of things is quite annoying as it's as basic as it gets and takes minimal effort to get right.
-The tuning stability of mine is quite poor, right now. Others have reported better results and I haven't played mine much, yet, so I'm hopeful that it will settle down with some more playing and string stretching. The generic tuners don't seem to work as well as those on other HBs I have, although they appear to be the same. Particularly on the lower two strings, so perhaps they don't like the heavier gauges used here. A replacement set of locking tuners might be a worthwhile investment.

Overall this is a hell of a bargain for the price, a pretty decent guitar in general and a great way to get into 7-string guitars.

Just get one
Jamie666 18.03.2023
In short: this is the best 150 eur i ever spent, get one
I bought this guitar after trying one out i borrowed from a friend. wanted a 7 to learn some riffs but wasn't sure i was gonna play it regularly so i didn't want to spend too much on it. Let’s start with the neck, it’s basically a wizard neck, not the super flat Japanese ones but similar to the ‘’nitro wizard 7’’ shape extremely comfortable, with a very nice satin finish (no knots or imperfections, just smooth maple), the neck joint allows very decent playing up to the 24th fret (i’m used to neck thru guitars and had no problem getting up there). The fretboard surprised me a lot, if u didn’t tell me anything i might have thought it was stained ebony, you can see it’s a stained fretboard (which i don’t mind) and it looks smooth it has that fast ‘’ebony’’ feel to it as opposed to the more grainy rosewood/laurel/pau ferro. Frets are supposed to be medium jumbo but to me look a bit more toward the jumbo side compared to the medium jumbos you would find on a fender guitar and make both chords and lead playing a breeze. The frets are comparable to anything up to 800/900 eur coming out of indonesia these days (maybe even better no toolmarks on this particular specimen), they won’t cut you, they feel smooth but are not overly polished or smoothed out (don’t expect ball ends or round fret ends) Radius is supposed to be 14, haven’t measured but it feels nice and flat, exactly what you would expect on a seven strings modern guitar. The nut was properly cut and seated, the sides finely sanded flush with the neck, i had 1000+ eur guitar with worst nuts. The tuners are decent, they hold tune and are relatively smooth, not the most precise but pretty good, one of mine had a deformed plastic ring that made it a bit unstable and thomann offered to send a replacement tuner. Apart from the defective one, tuners are decent and if u wind strings properly (one turn above one under, and stretch the strings) holds tune pretty well. The body is basically a kiesel aries shape with comfortable carves for upper fret access. The bridge is a nice hipshot ripoff, i love it, the harley benton guys deserve respect for understanding that a comfortable bridge should not be a premium feature and this hipshot-like piece is glorious and comfy in all his plagiarism. Knobs are smooth and precise, no hissing, switch feels solid and clicks in place nicely without getting stuck. Pickups give a resistance reading of 15k for the bridge, 9k in the neck and around 7k in the middle position, cavity is shielded with black paint and the lid is covered with aluminium tape. They sound pretty good in a metal context and the middle position can also be used for some cleans, the neck seems good for both leads and medium gain bluesy tones, bridge is just for modern riffing and shredding in my opinion. I really don’t understand other reviewers talking about the bridge pickup being ‘’muddy’’, it’s a high output pickup (15k) and as such sounds great if you add a boost and hit the front of a modern style amp without turning up the amp gain too much, you get that nice tight djenty sound, just don’t go all out with the amp gain, boost the signal and dial gain down until you get that defined chug, that way chords sound very defined and you can hear every note even in low tunings. All around great guitar at an incredible price, if i had to be extremely picky and look for imperfections these would be the only details giving away the actual price of this guitar: tuners are not the most precise, small residue of buffing compound on the headstock (takes a second to remove with a wet cloth and leaves no residue), small sanding traces near the neck heel (almost invisible and you will never feel them while playing). The guitar arrived well intonated and with a decent setup, i increased the relief slightly to allow for lower action without fret buzz and now plays great. I like this instrument and would reccomend it to anyone looking for a 7 string for metal/progressive styles of music, maybe just slap on some locking tuners and you got a killer 7 string

S
Great intro to seven string
Sandelfim 11.05.2020
I purchased this guitar after reading other positive reviews as I wanted something cheap to start getting into seven string guitar. I have had it for almost two weeks so far and have used it for general bedroom use and some recording. This is also my first time ordering from Thomann, who were excellent from start to finish and I will be ordering again!

I own a range of guitars from high end ESPs down to cheap Epiphones and LTDs and am a firm believer that a good guitar is not defined by price. Even so, the quality of this guitar at this price has blown me away. It is well built and I am confident it will survive being played at gigs. It was playable straight out of the box although a setup always helps. The finish is nice and even and the black hardware looks nice. It stays in tune better than I expected and the electronics all seem good quality. The pickups are a little muddy but for the price they are more than fine and do the job well enough.

This guitar is excellent and I have been recommending it to my guitar playing friends since it arrived, as with most Harley Benton products you cannot beat it for the price, if you want to get into extended range guitars without breaking the bank this is a no brainer.

Best £100 I have ever spent on a guitar.
Anonymous 04.09.2014
You cannot find a better quality guitar for £100, let alone a 7 string. The pickups are very good. The knobs have a nice resistance so they cant accidentally turn down while your playing. There is barely any static coming off the guitar when the volumes up and it isn't being played. The fret board is very nice. The best feature I would say is how easy it is to pinch harmonic practically every note. The only thing I think would of made this guitar better is to of put in a bridge with a whammy bar in. But saying this I literally could not care any less. THIS AXE IS FROM ZEUS HIMSELF. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED LIKE ME :) ! ( I play metal genre... )

Wasn't expecting this...
Anonymous 14.06.2016
First things first, I am not in anyway a "good" guitar player. I'm a bass player for close to 10 years so this is my first time picking up one this creatures.

I went straight to a 7 string mainly for the fact that I write alot of stuff on my 5 string bass in drop A, so obviously I need a guitar that good manage that without busting the bank. And oh boy this didn't disappointment!

The guitar arrived within 2 days (Germany to UK) well package and perfectly set up straight from the box! No need to do any changes what so ever, which is nice for obvious reasons.

Sound wise. I use this guitar through BIAS on my macbook or ipad and I can get any tone I want with it, from heavy djent through to funk and then to smooth blues without a problem.

It plays like a dream no over hanging frets no un-even frets no nothing which is amazing.

I highly recommend this guitar anyone no what their experience is, its cheap, its sounds great what more do you people need to know? Haha.

A
Astonishing quality for the price
Anonymous 27.03.2015
I've bought a fair few Harley Benton products now and regret buying none of them. They've all been of very high quality and in this case you couldn't even build this for the price they're asking. Crazy !

I had to lower the action a TINY bit, about 1mm, but that's personal preference. It arrived totally playable and with no fret buzz or setup problems. Intonation is perfect, all the hardware functions well with no crackles or glitches and the knobs and toggle switch are smooth yet precise.

Finish on the guitar is really nice, it's simplistic but for a "black" guitar there's nothing wrong with it. Nice shine to it and easy to keep clean. Tuning heads keep their tune and don't slip out.

Pickups sound good both distorted and clean, with a nice deep tone for rhythm and a more biting sound for the treble. No crackles when switching and the delineation between the sound is clear.

If you're looking to get into playing a 7 string guitar then I would recommend this wholeheartedly. The neck may not quite be as "fast" as an Ibanez (it's a little deeper) BUT that's a really, really minor quibble considering that getting a playable 7 String Gem would cost you about £600 at LEAST. I was playing this for a long time "out the box" before I changed the action a little and it was fine, it's just a matter of preference as to your playing style but the tool is provided to change the action should you desire and the bridge being how it is means it's easy to setup.

Also, worthy of note, this guitar has a fixed bridge which makes it really helpful for beginners as the traditional tuning/intonation problems that can befall people unfamiliar with floating/tremelo setups are not part of the equation here. I purposefully bought this mainly because of this. Even though I've played guitar for 20+ years I haven't had a Floyd Rose or equivalent for a long time as I just find them irksome.

I'm now considering buying the 6 string version also, just as another "fun" guitar as, for the price, these are just crazy good value.

For a beginner to 7 string, as I've said before, I would fully recommend this there's no need to spend more and for people familiar with 7 strings I would also say that it's a great guitar. I did mention earlier that the neck is a little deeper than an Ibanez but that doesn't mean this is a "slow" guitar, I've been playing loads of crazy death metal riffs on it and it really suits that sort of play. The slight increase in neck depth almost makes playing it feel more weighty and, well, "heavy" ;-)

No quibbles here, this is a steal and represents yet more high quality/low price value from Harley Benton.
