Hal Leonard The Blues Guitar Handbook, by Adam St. James, the latest addition to the Backbeat best-sellings is the Handbook of the History of the Blues Guitar, Let's start with the modest beginnings of the blues guitar in the first decades of the 20th Century with idols like Robert Johnson, Charley Patton and Son House. Back then the blues was at home in more rural areas , the blues scene moved in the course of 1940er/1950er more and more towards (large) urban agglomerations with blues greats on the electric guitar like Muddy Waters, Howlin 'Wolf and B.B. King. After that the blues rockers of the 60s, 70s and 80s came with names like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The blues guitar tradition is still continued by artists such as Keb Mo or even Duke Robillard or by not so tradition-conscious players like Ford and Derek Trucks.
