full sound and responsive to touch

I had to try the Oliv G, just to find out about the gut sound on my bass. I am happy with Pirastro Evah Pirazzi strings so far, but the Oliv G has a lovely sound. It is as thick as a D string, but very easy to play. It seems to be responsive and more alive than other strings, although I cannot exactly say why I have this impression. The tone is full and rich, both pizzzicato and arco.

I took the bass to my luthier to attach it, as the grooves had to be widened. I would consider replacing the D string too, as there is a tonal difference between D and G, particularly on arco. It does require regular re-tuning, unlike the nylon strings which stay in tune for a week, but this was not a problem. The construction looks very good so far.

If you can afford the string, (yes, they aren't cheap), then give it a try!

Warm and full sound

Using this G string with Evah Pirazzi on the other strings (D, A, and E) and it complements them perfectly. The sound (both pizz and arco) is full and warm and not as punchy as the Evah Pirazzi G string.

Three drawbacks that I can think of:
1. A bit on the thick side, approximately the size of my D string. However, not an issue for me as my nut was wide enough.
2. Takes a while to settle in tune. Took me about a month to stay in tune. Not a biggie though.
3. A bit pricey, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Darm! Nur Darm klingt wie Darm!

Pirastro ist ohnehin meine Wahl seit über zwei Jahrzehnten. Der Katalog bietet ein zwar unübersichtliches, dafür aber sehr reichhaltiges Saitenangebot für alle Lebenslagen. Mein Haupterwerbsholz wird in erster Linie für Theater / Musical / Schauspiel eingesetzt, also irgendwo zwischen leichtem Jazz mit viel Pizzicato über Dreigroschenopern bis zu Operetten mit viel Arco. Da brauchst du eine Saite, die gezupft ordentlich Wumms hat und sich dennoch tadellos streichen lässt, dabei aber zugleich handschmeichlerich genug ist, um auch lange Probenphasen ohne Beschwerden durchzustehen. Oliv ist da nach meiner Erfahrung absolut top, relativ stimmstabil für Darmverhältnisse und sowohl klanglich als auch haptisch eine Offenbarung! Jedoch mit Einschränkungen: ich benutze G und D Oliv, die A- und E-Saite gefallen mir nicht so gut, sie klingen vor allem im Pizzicato sehr undifferenziert. Ich kombiniere G/D-Oliv mit Obligato A/E, das passt von den Stärken her sehr gut und hat den Vorteil, dass man mit den beiden tiefen Kunststoffsaiten immer zwei Saiten hat, die sich nicht verstimmen, falls man zwischendurch mal die Därme nachspannen muss und einen Referenzton braucht.

Dem Darm-Neuling gebe ich zu bedenken, unbedingt die Saitenauflagen an Steg und Sattel deutlich zu vergrößern, sonst reisst der Darm schneller, als man neue Saiten aufziehen kann. Danach ist Wohlfühlen angesagt!!
